Haale - No Ceiling
"[Haale's] earnest blends of electric guitar, thoughtful lyrics, and vocal
gymnastics borrow from both ancient song and the poetry of Persia.
The surprise chestnut at the heart of the music is the dynamic, fiery
delivery of Haale herself, whose voice is by turns deep and
commanding, feather-light and breezy, and as rich and sensual as
dark-chocolate fondue." -- FLAVORPILL
HAALE evokes both the spiritual and traditional culture of her parents'
homeland of Iran, and the energy of psychedelic rock and roll from the
sounds of New York City, where she was born. Her music and her
message are formed by the powerful combination of these influences,
invoking both a swaying trance and a rock sensibility she describes as
"Psychedelic Sufi Trance Rock."
After seeing Haale at a club last fall, David Byrne invited her to be part
of his Nonesuch Records-sponsored "One Note" series at Carnegie
Hall. That show served to kick off a season of near continuous touring
for the band, playing clubs, colleges, and festivals like South by
Southwest in Austin, Bonnaroo in Tennessee and the MIMIFestival in
Marseilles, France.
Albert Hammond Jr. - Como Te Llama? LP
Albert Hammond Jr. is the 2008 NME Awards USA winner for Best
Indie/Alternative Solo Artist. This is the follow up to Albert's critically
acclaimed debut release Yours To Keep. NY Times says 'Albert
writes phenomenal songs!' Spins proclaims 'Top shelf indie pop. 4 Stars'
and Esquire picks it as the 2007 Esky Award winner for 'Best Solo Debut'.
Albert Hammond, Jr. is a musician and member of the garage rock band,
The Strokes for which he mostly plays rhythm guitar, but occasionally
plays lead as well (eg. in "Last Nite").
Lisa Hannigan - Sea Sew
Sea Sew is a deeply poetic, subtly powerful debut from one of
Ireland’s most promising and successful (already Platinum in Ireland –
the only territory where this album has been released thus far) young
voices. KCRW in Santa Monica is already on board, and Sea
Sew is already top 20 at the station, without a label even servicing
the record.
As you know, Lisa Hannigan got her start in the USA by famously
backing Damien Rice on his now-classic first album O, and on
the subsequent tours he did across the country. Currently, Lisa and
her band are opening the sold-out Jason Mraz tour (Lisa and Jason do
at least one song per night together on stage during Jason’s set – a
great introduction to his large fan base).
Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals - Live At Twist & Shout
This indie-store only exclusive contains a CDC/DVD of Ben Harper and
the Innocent Criminals, performing from the new album Lifeline
at Twist and Shout on August 30, 2007. A must-have for any Ben Harper
fan this holiday season (and beyond!)

Ben Harper - Shimmer & Shine 10
10" vinyl with 2 tracks. "Shimmer" is our lead off single and 2nd track will
be an exlusive non-album live track
Harvey Milk - The Pleaser LP
Harvey Milk's final album, The Pleaser is a straight-up, riff-
rock tour-de-force; replete with huge hooks, whiskey-and-cigarette
vocals, wicked guitar solos, and all the swagger and conviction a true
rock record should have. In a startling turn, following two of the most
unique and challenging records of the 90's, this trio uncorked an
indispensable collection of Big Rock Songs; the kind other bands work
a lifetime to write but never do. Whereas Harvey Milk's first two
outings showed the band creating their own twisted rock vision by
harnessing the power of lush, noisy and painfully emotional heavy
metal, The Pleaser finds the band channeling the spirits of
Thin Lizzy, Kiss, and early ZZ Top to create a brutish, muscular canon
of classic rock jams. And with this gem of a record (and it's
accompanying live on the radio performance) Harvey Milk closed the
door on the first, illustrious chapter in its legacy.
Harvey Milk – Anthem DVD
44 song live documentary chronicling this band from their first shows
in early 1993 to their recent stint of reunion shows. Shot almost
entirely on broadcast quality television cameras (by a guy that worked
in the business), Anthem is a mandatory release for any fan of
the band or any fan of metal, avant-garde or plain old rock and
roll.
The collector's package was lovingly designed by Stephen O'Malley
(Sunn O))), Khanate), with liner notes by Chunklet Magazine publisher
Henry Owings and includes a 3" CD of four (yes! four!) unreleased
Harvey Milk tracks with initial orders. Anthem will be a one-
time pressing of 1,000.
Harvey Milk have a new full length planned on Troubleman Unlimited
in September and a reissue of their seminal Courtesy And Goodwill
Towards Men due out any day now on Relapse.
Hayden - The Place Where We Lived
In 1996, Hayden performed both nights of Neil Young's annual Bridge
School Concert. In 1998, Hayden toured North America with a full band
in support of The Closer I Get. After the release of The
Closer I Get, Hayden was bought out from his contract with
Universal Records for a large sum of money. Full details have never
become public.
In 2001 (and with no label support), Hayden very quietly distributed
100 hand-written, packaged and numbered copies of Skyscraper
National Park to friends and independent record shops throughout
Toronto. This was quickly followed by an additional 1,500 hand-
numbered copies (this time with professionally printed liner notes).
These copies were primarily sold at live shows. The critical success of
these two limited-edition runs led to a full commercial release of the
recording later that same year. In 2004, Hayden released his long
awaited follow up album, Elk Lake Serenade, and toured North
America with Oshawa's Cuff the Duke acting as his back-up band.
Heavy Heavy Low Low - Turtle Nipple and the Toxic Shock
Never failing to intrigue, the title is a good representation of some of the
wacky hijinx that will ensue when the album hits your CD player. Tells
vocalist Robbie, "The whole album is really about having a good time.
We're always out to just do what we enjoy, go out on the road and make
weird music. The album is just a bunch of jokes about all of the random
enjoyment we have had on tour."
Katie Herzig - Weightless
From even the first note of a Katie Herzig tune, you know you've
stumbled into something special. Maybe it's the way she juxtaposes
lyrical playfulness with incredibly thoughtful depth and emotion.
Maybe it's her stunning, delicately powerful voice. Doesn't really
matter. The captivating effect is in full force. From her college days in
the Boulder-based band Newcomers Home to her 2005 solo debut
Watch Them Fall, Katie has always worked on tender acoustic
renderings that reveal the emotional inner-workings of a seeker of
truth and love.
Katie moved to Nashville in 2006 and offered up Weightless.
From the delightful romps that kick it off, to the mesmerizing heart
aches that slip in toward the end, it's a powerful journey that must be
taken.
In support of Weightless, Katie has opened shows for The Fray
and many others, while also making time for the PASTE Songwriters
tour. To take matters even further, a cover of her song “Heaven’s My
Home” (performed by The Duhks) was nominated for a 2007 Grammy
for Best Country Performance! She has also had TV placements on
various shows including "Grey's Anatomy," "Smallville" and “ER.”
David Hidalgo & Louie Perez - The Long Goodbye
The Long Goodbye is a collection of previously unreleased
recordings celebrating 40 years of songwriting by David Hidalgo &
Louie Perez of Los Lobos. The songs range from acoustic American folk
to classic country, showcasing just how deep American music is
engrained in their influences.
David Hidalgo and Louie Perez started writing songs together when
they were in high school, way before they ever became members of
that group known as "just another band from East L.A.": aka Los Lobos.
As the main songwriters in one of the world's most solid and long-
lasting roots-rock enclaves, they've accumulated an outstanding
collection of tunes.
"We started this musical conversation back in about 1970, and we
haven't stopped talking," Perez says, sounding simultaneously amused
and incredulous at the realization that it's been so long. "That's why
it's important for us to explain how it's done; to sit down and say, 'Hey,
this is us as songwriters, this is where it all starts.'"

that you're kind of looking at your graduation picture from high
school, but there's something very honest about it."
Missy Higgins - Where I Stood EP
Austrailian superstar Missy Higins is set to release her 2nd album,
On A Clear Night, on Feb 26. Already 4x platinum in
Australia, she built a strong base through touring on the strength of
her 2005 debut. This EP features the single, a B-side, a Neil Finn
cover, and a live track (“The Wrong Girl”).
The 23 year old singer/songwriter from Melbourne has enjoyed
phenomenal success in her homeland in spite - or perhaps because -
of shunning the usual synthetic packaging and tabloid tackiness.
Instead she's adopted a more timeless approach, relying on her
undeniable songs and unforgettable live performances to build a
genuine and gimmick free connection with her audience.
Missy's new album, On A Clear Night, retains the hallmarks of
her earlier work - irresistible melodies and “arrow through the heart”
lyrics delivered by a voice that clearly means it. However, this time
around the tracks benefit from the empathetic production of Mitchell
Froom who helmed the first three Crowded House albums, as well as
works by other quality artists such as Ron Sexsmith, Elvis Costello, Paul
McCartney and the Finn Brothers.

Homestar Runner - Strong Bad's Emails, Disc 5: Emails 131 through 160
From the creators of Homestar Runner comes the next installment in
the series of Strong Bad Emails DVDs. Disc 5 is packed full of over 2
hours of non-stop laughs as Strong Bad checks emails 131 through
160. Included are such classics as “candy product,” when Strong Bad
creates his own outlandish candy bar, “bottom 10,” where he recalls
his least favorite things, and “retirement,” when his two previous
computers (the Tandy and the compy) return for one last email check.
A never-before-seen email, commentary tracks, hidden easter eggs
and other bonus material complete the total DVD experience that fans
have come to expect from the class-act that is the brothers chaps.
Hot Chip (with Robert Wyatt and Geese) - Remix EP
Despite their feverish schedule this year which took in numerous side
projects, solo records, countless dancefloor-igniting remixes,
production duties and, of course relentless touring (which culminated
in their triumphal homecoming shows at Brixton Academy in
November) that indefatigable, delightfully off-kilter four-headed
electro pop colossus known as Hot Chip have somehow found the time
to assemble a lovingly put together little present for their fans. And not
only that, but they have managed to rope in the services of none other
than the godfather of the experimental psych-prog world, Robert
Wyatt and kindred mischievous electronic spirits Geese to help out as
well.
Long recognised as one of the pioneers of avant-jazz rock, from his
beginnings as a member of Soft Machine and through his
collaborations with Scritti Politti and Syd Barrett, Robert Wyatt brings
his quietly magical touch to 3 songs personally chosen from Hot Chip’s
2008 album Made in the Dark. The result – as recorded at
Gallery Studios earlier this year – are several mutations of songs that
are as delicate and whimsical as they are adventurous and distinctive,
be it the quixotic cornet and jew’s harp on “Made in the Dark”, or
Wyatt’s singular vocals and whistling on “Whistle for Will”, or the lush
added effects and atypical arrangements on “We’re Looking for a Lot of
Love”.
Meanwhile, Hot Chip’s old friends and collaborators Geese (aka Emma
and Vince from The Elysian Quartet) also lent a hand, reworking the
new, Robert Wyatt- assisted “We’re Looking…” while completely
overhauling “One Pure Thought” from a straightahead floor shaker into
something stranger, dreamier, but no less lovely. All in all, a
deliciously unpredictable collaboration made in quirk-pop heaven.
Hot Chip - One Life Stand
One Life Stand is Hot Chip's fourth album, joining a growing
list of exciting releases on the 2010 docket. We've taken in "Take It In,"
today the nerdy/sexy/sweet electropop lads offer a listen of their
senior set's (excellently titled) title track. They open it up the way
Basement Jaxx might, spare bass and synth portending some sort of
explosion, but then it turns to slick dance rock territory, the disco
guitar, Joe Goddard's molasses-coated backing vocal, etc. The hook is
sweet, because Hot Chip's got a way of mixing their booty shaking with
genuine pathos. Alexis sings "I only want to be your one life stand / tell
me do you stand by your man." It's a bit heavy for a club-floor come-
on, but then Taylor's already spent an album sounding the warning,
and another telling you he's ready for the floor.
Hot Hot Heat - Let Me In EP
Hot Hot Heat fans rejoice! In addition to their latest release,
Happiness Ltd., the band is releasing this 3-song EP exclusively
through indie retail, which features two non-album tracks!
Charlie Hunter - Gentlemen, I Neglected...
Charlie Hunter's latest recording effort, Gentlemen, I Neglected To
Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid, features the jaw-
dropping guitarist alongside drummer Eric Kalb (Sharon Jones and the
Dap Kings, John Scofield) and a new horn section including trombonist
Curtis Fowlkes (Jazz Passengers, Lounge Lizards, Bill Frisell),
trombonist Alan Ferber (Don Byron, Kenny Wheeler) and trumpeter Eric
Biondo (Antibalas, TV On The Radio). Gentlemen, I Neglected To
Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid marks Hunter's second
full-length release on his independent label Spire Artist Media.
Charlie Hunter - Baboon Strength
We recorded Baboon Strength at Trout Studio in Brooklyn.
They have an old school set-up where everything happens in the same
room, instruments, mixing desk, tape machine, everything. We
recorded to 16 track two-inch tape before putting it in the digital
realm (for those of you who are interested). Erik brought his 1970s
Yamaha combo organ, Casiotone and Echoplex. His sonic aesthetic and
abilities as an improviser are impeccable. Go Erik!
Tony played Trout's big ass bass drum, snare and toms. He also
happens to be, in my opinion, the best pure pocket drummer I've ever
heard. Science. In terms of groove and time it's his world, we live in it,
act accordingly. Erik and I both concur that he gets the game ball for
this record. I brought some decent songs and tried not to overplay. It's
a never- ending process. Dave McNair did a hell of a job mixing and
mastering the disc. Check out the fat drum sound on Difford-
Tillbrook.
Hurricane Bells - Tonight Is The Ghost
Tonight Is The Ghost, the debut album from the band Hurricane
Bells, is a moody affair. A mix of somber undercurrents and chiming
guitars, the album is at once plaintive and triumphant, bathed in echo and
reverb. Yet there’s a looseness, hope, and soulfulness in its melancholic
tempest; a late night thundershower with a new day on its heels.
I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody's Business - World We Know
6 months in the making and six years since the release of the last record,
ever-evolving artist Ace Enders sets a release date for I Can Make A Mess
Like Nobody’s Business. The new record entitled The World We
Know is the follow-up to 2004’s self-titled record. This release
marks the end of an era for Enders, and the start of a new decade fresh off
west coast independent Drive-thru records.
Interpol - Our Love To Admire LP
Our Love To Admire is at once unmistakably Interpol and
undeniably new. The witty and perverse "No I In Threesome" is an
upbeat ode to shaking up a staid relationship, propelled by Carlos D's
peerless bass melody, while the tenderly observant "Pace Is the Trick"
proves that the band are still the masters of the dramatic – check the
painful pause right before the sinfully satisfying return of Sam's
thundering drums and Daniel's ringing lead guitar. The band's
impressively seductive evolution is obvious all over the record, but
never more so than on tracks like "Mammoth," "Who Do You Think" and
on the album's lyrical centerpiece, the ghostly "Rest My Chemistry.".
Interpol is back, every bit as good as before but charged with a new
spirit, a new direction, a new label and, most of all, a new confidence.

Into the Presence - Into the Presence
Ghosts of the past haunt any piece of art. With Into the Presence, the
hauntings are twofold. To wit: the band’s debut album feels spiritually
connected to the musically progressive era of the 70s (that’s
“progressive” as in adventurous, not as in Emerson, Lake and Palmer).
Then there’s the ghostly vibes -- literally -- that sprung up during the
album’s recording.
“We experienced some stuff in the studio,” admits drummer Tim
Alexander (of Primus and A Perfect Circle fame), who recorded the
record in his home studio in Arizona. “Some weird sightings, bottles of
water freezing for no reason, whispers everywhere. Lots of interesting
energy.”
Iron & Wine - Boy With A Coin (CD-Single)
“Boy With A Coin” is the first single from the upcoming Iron & Wine album
The Shepherd’s Dog, which is slated for release
on September 25. It will be the first proper Iron & Wine
album in 3 1/2 years, making it one of the most highly
anticipated releases of the fall. The previous album Our
Endless, Numbered Days has just exceeded the 200,000
scan mark. The two B sides are exclusive to this release,
which is available exclusively to independent retail.
Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit - Live At Twist and Shout
The third release bearing the “Live At Twist and Shout” moniker, and
the quality just doesn’t let up. Former Drive-By-Trucker Isbell is a
superb songwriter and a totally distinctive vocalist. His band The 400
Unit just tears it up and this release will prove that to a lot of people.
Every time I have played this CD either alone, or at the store or for
friends it has created a kind of mystical emotional gauze that fills the
room with a warm honeyed hue. It really does make people stop and
say “who is this guy? This is great.” The “Live At Twist And Shout” disc
gives the most well-rounded view of this important artist yet. It
contains 3 Drive-By Truckers songs, 2 songs from his great solo album
Sirens of The Ditch and a spot-on cover of Van Morrison’s
“Into The Mystic.” His choice of Van Morrison is appropriate because, at
his best, Isbell occupies the same rarified space as Morrison. Southern
fried instead of Celtic soul, but an artist who is capable of transporting
the listener to a unique and special place. I have loved each of the Live
at Twist releases, but this one could be the most important because it
helps define a great artist. I highly suggest it to all.

Lee Johnson / Russian National Orchestra - Dead Symphony No. 6
From Reuters Life: The Grateful Dead made their name playing
improvisational music born anew with every performance, and now an
American composer has sought to capture their psychedelic spirit in a
classical symphony. Dead Symphony No. 6 by Lee Johnson
encompasses some of the band's most familiar melodies and its most
otherworldly jams in a work in 12 movements. The symphony is "a
musical embrace of American culture" and a natural outgrowth of the
band's spirit.
Highlights include movements based on the Dead's psychedelic classic
"St. Stephen" and the rarely played "Mountains of the Moon." There is
even an improvised portion, in the lament "Stella Blue." Johnson chose
songs based on their melodic potential and overall fit. A movement
based on the song "Here Comes Sunshine," for example, stretches the
original melody in time so it is almost unrecognizable amid the
harmonies. One ambitious movement was based on "Blues for Allah,"
which was played live only three times by the Grateful Dead. In
Johnson's version, a clarinet's jaunty refrain evokes American
composer George Gershwin, while deep cellos envelop the movement
in its powerful Middle Eastern theme. The symphony's overture and
finale include strains of "Funiculi Funicula," the much-parodied Italian
song the Dead used often as a playful tune-up riff.
Freedy Johnston - My Favorite Waste Of Time
The new all-covers album
by Freedy Johnston is a rockin' sprint through ten classic love and
love-esque songs by Marshall Crenshaw, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty,
Matthew
Sweet, and other deities. It was recorded in Nashville with legendary
bassist Bob Babbitt, drummer Ed Greene, and a whole van-load of great
guest musicians.
Daniel Johnston - Story of an Artist
pecial package contains CD and art postcard with liner notes written by
acclaimed art critic Carter Ratcliff. Packaged in collectable tin box.
Limited edition - only 1,000 were made.
Rickie Lee Jones - Pop Pop double LP
An eclectic collection of covers from one of jazz-pop's most eclectic
performers, Pop Pop travels from the stage to tin pan alley
through Jimi Hendrix's sky. Rickie Lee Jones cradles each of these
songs with her pleading, gentle voice, backing them with subtle
orchestration courtesy of notable performers including Robben Ford,
Joe Henderson, and Charlie Haden. Her attention to love songs of the
'40s and '50s demonstrates almost a longing for simpler times and
simpler love, and these qualities are echoed in the treatment of songs
like "My One and Only Love" and "I'll Be Seeing You." Her subdued take
on the psychedelic Jimi Hendrix screamer "Up From the Skies" is
slowed to a bluesy acoustic number, while the bratty refrain from Peter
Pan's "I Won't Grow Up" seems blushingly sweet.
Will Kimbrough - Wings
The songs on Wings invite the listener to comprehend the
universe with a modern introspective eye. Exploring themes
surrounding the conflict between family and career, love and work,
parents and children, the music is based in classic folk rock, with
touches of atmospheric guitar, cello, saxophone, trumpet, banjo and
Hammond organ. "...penetrating portraits of compromise and
vulnerability inspire heavy soul-searching. Eloquent lyrics and mood-
conjuring instrumentation... a must for listeners seeking an enduring
alternative to the ephemeral fluff ruling the airwaves." ~Entertainment
Weekly
Diana Krall - Live in Paris double LP
Recorded "live" at the Paris Olympia, Live in Paris offers
listeners Diana Krall's understanding of the musical techniques of
composition, piano, and vocal improvisation on 12 songs from the
Great American Songbooks of Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, George and Ira
Gershwin, and contemporary artists Joni Mitchell and Billy Joel.
Accompanied by the award-winning Anthony Wilson on guitar, John
Pisano on acoustic guitar, John Clayton on bass, Jeff Hamilton on
drums, and Paulinho Da Costa on percussion as well as the Orchestra
Symphonies European on "Let's Fall in Love" and "I've Got You Under
My Skin," the lovely vocalist heightens your listening pleasures with
distinctive phrasings and tangible pathways to inside the creative
imagination by getting inside harmony, the changes, and melodic
structures.
Diana Krall - The Look Of Love double LP
While there's no denying that jazz-pop star Diana Krall's movie-star
good looks went a long way toward endearing her to mainstream
America, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Just as undeniable are Krall's
gifts as a pianist and singer. Far from a crass populist, she's a subtle,
nuanced performer who approaches her craft with an excess of skill
and knowledge. This is apparent from the very beginning of The
Look Of Love, when Krall tackles the overly familiar Gershwin
chestnut "S'Wonderful" not the way countless jazz singers have done in
preceding decades, but in a style influenced by Joao Gilberto, who
recorded the tune years before in a simmering bossa nova mode. This
marriage of canny craft and artistic inspiration is repeated again and
again throughout the album. Most of the songs here have been trotted
out countless times by Krall's contemporaries and predecessors, but
her thoughtful phrasing and low-key dynamic shifts match her
unhurried, pastel piano style on each tune to bring out something
special at the song's core.
Kuroma - Paris
Hank Sullivant, formerly of MGMT and The Whigs, is proud to unveil his
debut material in a project called Kuroma. Part rock n roll and part
experimentation, Kuroma is a fully realized sound showcasing the many
talents and interests of a gifted songwriter. A spirited reinvention of past
rock 'n roll stylings, Paris is soulful and celebratory with a pop
potency that invites a closer listen.
Ben Kweller - How Ya Lookin’ Southbound?
BK's first studio recordings since the 2006 critically-acclaimed self
titled release. This limited edition 7-track EP provides an exclusive
teaser / warm-up for Kweller's upcoming and highly-anticipated
January 2009 full-length release entitled Changing Horses.
Three of the songs on this EP, "Fight", "Things I Like To Do", and
"Sawdust Man" will appear on the January 09 release. Kweller is back in
terrific form on this catchy and melodic offering: he stays true to his
quirky folk-pop sensibilities. BK also stretches out and injects dusty,
and charming twang and Americana into each composition. The EP was
produced by Kweller in Austin, TX and recorded to all analog tape. It
features his band "The Great Lakes"...who turn in amazing harmonies,
smoldering pedal steel and dobro performances, and lend Leon
Russell-esque piano bounce. Also, BK managed to weave in some
spooky and compelling field recordings that segue's a handful of
songs.
