Paper Bird - Live at Twist and Shout

Price:  $5.99

Standing firm in no existing genre, Paper Bird's backbone is their songwriting, musicianship and a general allergy to all limitations and trends. With seven members and no leader, this band is pulled in every direction imaginable, but thanks to their unique instrumentation this Colorado based group is able to merge their spontaneous creativity into one, solid sound. The members of the band- Sarah Anderson, vocals and trumpet; sisters Esmé and Genny Patterson, vocals; Tyler Archuletta, trombone; Paul DeHaven, guitar; Caleb Summeril, banjo; Macon Terry, upright bass - bring a Jazzy, Folk, Americana sound that pays homage to the American Bandstand of the 1950’s. Still, they are able to achieve the Indie rock image and resonance of the current age. The band’s inception came three years ago in Breckenridge, Colorado. Meeting for the first time, the members were busking in the streets where they earned a couple hundred dollars, bought some beer and dinner, and decided to form a band. Later that same month they went into the studio and recorded their first album Anything Nameless and Joymaking, which has been a top selling record in local retail stores. The Colorado favorites have recently been in the studio recording their sophomore album. The band is so excited about their new creation they decided to release a prelude to the full-length album. The five song EP A Sky Underground was self-released before their 2009 summer tour which included stops at High Sierra Music Festival, Oregon Country Fair, 10,000 Lakes, and Mile High Music Festival. The female vocals create a soulful, dynamic harmony that accentuates each singer, while giving the illusion of a single voice. The trombone, banjo, and guitar elevate the music to a higher level while the skilled notes of the bass reflect the harmonies. Each style bounces off the other, while each note appreciates the other. They make audiences feel love, excitement, and passion. A show not to be missed, a band that must be heard: Paper Bird is one of a kind.

Porcupine Tree - We Lost The Skyline

Price:  $6.99

On the 4th October 2007 Porcupine Tree arrived for an in-store performance and signing session at Park Avenue CDs in Orlando, Florida, with 200 fans also in attendance. Although it was originally planned that the full band would play, lack of space dictated that only the 2 guitarists / singers Steven Wilson and John Wesley deliver an impromptu performance, including many songs rarely (if ever) played by the band, making for a very special and intimate show. Fortunately this one-off performance was captured by Full Sail (with their remote recording facility) and the complete 8 song, 33 minute show is now being released in a digipak sleeve created by photographer Lasse Hoile and designer Carl Glover. Coming soon: Lightbulb Sun double CD deluxe re-issue.

Joe Purdy - Last Clock on the Wall

Price:  $9.99

Singer/songwriter Joe Purdy released his 10th album Last Clock on the Wall on March 17th, 2009 at 4:00 in the morning, because that is when he finished it. Purdy releases his albums on his independent label, Joe Purdy Records, and with the help of national TV placements and a grassroots fan base, has been able to sell a staggering 800,000 direct track downloads in the US on iTunes without ever signing to a label.

Because Joe's writing process is heavily influenced by the environment that surrounds him, Purdy's albums act as a travel guide for his experiences. Last Clock On The Wall was recorded over 6 days at Old Mill Studios, located in a 17th century mill converted into a live arts theater in Strathaven, just outside of Glasgow. Take My Blanket and Go (2007) was recorded in NYC following a UK tour in 2006, You Can Tell Georgia (2006) was recorded outside of London immediately following a European tour with Tom McRae, while Paris in the Morning (2006) was recorded during a short visit to Paris a few months later. Canyon Joe (2007) was recorded at his home in California, after being stranded in New Mexico during a blizzard over New Years Eve.

Adding to his arsenal, Purdy has been embraced by a broader audience through Prime Time network television. His song “Wash Away (Reprise)," from the Julie Blue album, was chosen by J.J. Abrams for an episode of ABC’s smash hit “Lost” in its first season. Shortly after, Purdy’s song “I Love the Rain Most” (also off Julie Blue) was featured in an episode of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy," which led to “The City” (Only Four Seasons) being included in the show as well as on the Grey’s Anatomy Season I soundtrack which sold over 150,000 units. Additionally, Purdy landed five more songs in “Grey’s” episodes including "San Jose", “Suitcase”, “Can’t get it Right Today”, and "Rainy Day Lament", which was featured on an episode of the fox hit "House." “Can't Get It Right Today" was also featured in a new KIA ad that ran nationally.

Purdy also has the glowing endorsement of Pete Townsend, who invited him to duet on his “In The Attic – Pete Townsend and friends” concert series. The DVD release of this concert series features Townsend and Purdy performing an acoustic version of “Let My Love Open The Door” and a touching performance of Joe’s song “Daisy,” as accompanied by his father Dave Purdy on mandolin.

Ravena Colt - Slight Spell

Price:  $9.99

In 1902, University of Pennsylvania professor Dennis Magner wrote The Art of Taming and Educating the Horse. In it, Magner describes an interesting case of The Ravenna Colt, a virtually untamable, yet not necessarily barbarous animal.

The Ravenna Colt, in today’s incarnation, is Johnny Quaid finally realizing and returning to his troubadour roots. He first conceptualized the group’s approach to alternative country more than a decade ago. Quaid was well immersed in music, from his own songwriting and performing, to his work as a recording engineer at Above the Cadillac Studios — chops that would serve the young songwriter well.

In 1998 Johnny joined Jim James, a.k.a. Yim Yames, on a project that would change their lives — My Morning Jacket. The group worked feverishly touring and recording and has not slowed down since. Quaid lends his guitar licks and engineering style on the first three albums, The Tennessee Fire, At Dawn, It Still Moves, as well as a barrage of EPs and singles.

Quaid departed from the group amicably at the start of 2004. He left his native Kentucky, headed west to California and worked as a carpenter while keeping a writer’s pen at hand.

He addresses this immediately on “South Of Ohio,” singing “I lost my drawl in California.” It was upon moving back east that Johnny not only picked up where he left off with Above the Cadillac, but also felt it was time to get The Colt running free. You hear a myriad of influences in The Colt’s concoction throughout its debut album for Karate Body/Removador Recordings Slight Spell. “According to the Matador” combines the Flying Burrito Brothers’ dark, spacious twang with a traditional folk in the vein of Townes Van Zandt and Bob Dylan. The reverberated swamp boogie “Forsake and Combine” evokes southern rock with a delicate, thinking man’s edge. The dreamy and windswept “Loner in Disguise” truly highlights the cosmic in Gram Parson’s description of insurgent country as “cosmic American music.”

Quaid has done well as his own conductor, as the organic, ever- changing Ravenna Colt is a powerful addition to the alternative country canon. The group is now made up of Philip Carlson, J. Brent Stewart, Daniel T. Mohler and Johnny Quaid, though new collaborations and different directions will be the modus operandi for the adventurous collective. The Ravenna Colt is a well-interpreted, craftily designed slice of Americana that keeps Louisville on the map.

Josh Ritter - Live at the 9:30 Club

Price:  $6.99

Josh Ritter returns this spring with the “Small Town USA” tour in support of his highly praised 2007 release, The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter (Sony BMG Music Entertainment/Victor). Named by Entertainment Weekly as one of “The 10 Most Exciting Artists Now,” Ritter continues to receive critical acclaim for this, his fourth full-length album. Of the new release, the Washington Post describes it as his “…most freewheeling and satisfying record to date…” while Amazon declares it “…the best album of 2007, hands down, by the most under-accorded American musical genius.”

Additionally, a new EP, Live at the 9:30 Club, will be released, featuring songs from the album. Originally broadcast by NPR’s "All Songs Considered", the 8-song disc features recordings from Ritter’s sold out DC concert in October 2007. The limited edition EP will be available exclusively at select independent record stores nationwide.

Josh Ritter - Self Titled

Price:  $10.99

Josh Ritter's self-titled debut (recorded in 1999) has never been available for physical distribution. It has only been sold on Josh's website, and at gigs. Therefore, this is an incredible opportunity for independent retail. In addition, the 22 upcoming U.S. shows are only a sketch of the visibility Josh will have in 2008. Josh's fanbase has only grown, as evidenced by his best selling release from last year - The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter. This is what Josh says about his self-titled debut: "This album was recorded during my senior year at Oberlin College. We worked in a tiny studio on campus, drank beer that I had just turned old enough to buy legally and began taking the first steps along the road I still walk today, eight years later. I'm still very proud of these songs and I hope you enjoy them." - Josh Ritter, February 2008

Josh Ritter - Golden Age of Radio

Price:  $12.99

Josh Ritter's first catalog re-issue! His 2001 recording Golden Age of Radio has been drastically improved. The album now includes a BONUS cd, featuring Josh performing the entire album solo acoustic, plus b-sides and videos. The bonus acoustic album was recorded in 2008, so these recordings have not been previously available. Fans of Josh treasure the acoustic versions of his songs because they often provide a vastly different perspective on the music. In addition, since these acoustic tracks were recorded seven years after the 2001 release, they most certainly offer a more seasoned, and possibly altered frame of reference, on the original gems.

Josh Ritter - Hello Starling

Price:  $12.99

Josh Ritter's second catalog re-issue! Like Golden Age Of Radio (re-issued early in 2009), Ritter's 2003 recording Hello Starling has been drastically improved. The updated version now includes a bonus cd, featuring Josh performing the entire album solo acoustic, plus four live b-sides. The acoustic album was recorded for this re-issue in 2008, so these recordings have not been previously released. Fans of Josh treasure the acoustic versions of his songs because they often provide a vastly different perspective on the music. The success of The Golden Age Of Radio reissue is tangible proof of the demand for this repertoire. Both CDs are housed in a gorgeous tri-fold cardboard sleeve, with new artwork and liner notes by Dennis Lehane (author of The Given Day and Mystic River)

The Rocket Summer - You Gotta Believe

The full- length Calendar Days was recorded in 2002, and released in 2003 by The Militia Group. The grassroots following exploded as TRS toured relentlessly, climaxed by a warm reception in Japan. A second indie album, Hello, Good Friend, recorded in Brooklyn with producer Tim O’Hier, was released in 2005, as the fan base continued to grow.

Rosebuds - Night Of The Furies LP

Price:  $13.99

Night Of The Furies is the third full-length from The Rosebuds, and will have fans heading for the dance floor with "Get Up Get Out" and "Hold on to This Coat." Stylistically, however, Night Of The Furies follows a logical progression from their earlier work, 2003's The Rosebuds Make Out (MRG235) and 2005's Birds Make Good Neighbors (MRG264). The danceable beats meld with catchy melodies built on themes both dark and seductive. Thematically, the songs are presented as individual and random parts of a larger story. The mood is ominous yet enticing; dangerous yet enchanting. Lyrics explore revolution and struggle, actions and consequences, but also love and redemption. One could easily just bounce along on the infectious pop hooks. Dig a little deeper, however, and a larger story and unified themes begin to unfold.
